With the announcement of the Ford Ranger Raptor bringing quite a disturbance in the global pick-up truck segment, automotive brands like Nissan is eyeing to develop a performance-spec version of the Navara to compete with the buffed up Ranger.
Based from an AutoGuide report, on March 6, Nissan filled for a patent application with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) for ‘Navara Off-Roader’ name. The badge is reserved under Nice Classification (an international system used to classify goods) Group 12 which is for land, water and air vehicles and vehicle components.
Renault-Nissan light commercial vehicle head Ashwani Gupta in a previous interview with Australian website Motoring said that Nissan is not keen on creating a product like the Ranger Raptor. But things seemed to change and later on expressed their interest in developing a product that will fit the off-road focused sub-segment.
“If you would have asked me this question yesterday (about a Raptor rival) I would have said this is not in our priority list,” Gupta said in February. “But if you are asking this question today then I am saying this is an opportunity we would like to study.” he added.
The Ranger Raptor has vamped up features from the base mode like rugged exterior design, off-road spec tires and the juicy Fox suspension system. Under the hood, the Ranger Raptor will be available with a special 2.0L turbocharged diesel engine with power rated at 210 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque.
If you doubt Nissan developing a high performance pick-up truck, you should remember that Nissan and Mercedes-Benz partnered for the Mercedes-Benz X-Class pick-up and rumors have it that Nissan could use the same 3.0L V6 turbo diesel for the Benz pick-up.
If Nissan would really consider producing the high performance Navara, the Ranger Raptor will not be the sole spot-sitter on the pick-up truck sub-segment.
Should Nissan finally decides to rival the Ranger Raptor, the Philippine market will definitely hold high hopes with the ‘Navara Off-Roader’ being locally available as the local automotive market have seen high performance cars from Nissan like the 2017 Nissan GT-R and the recently revealed Nismo GT-R.
