With the key players in the automotive industry preparing for the seemingly inevitable future of electric cars, the Austrian-American actor and famed ‘Terminator’, Arnold Schwarzenegger did not wait and built himself a full electric-powered Mercedes-Benz SUV of his own.
The ex-California Governor partnered with the Austria-based battery company Kreisel Electric to convert his V6 diesel Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen to a full electric car. Specializing in engineering batteries and drivetrain software for electric cars, Kreisel offers custom-built electric cars to its consumers.
For Schwarzenegger’s G-Wagen, Kreisel swapped out the V6 diesel power unit and was replaced by an 80kWh worth of batteries which now consume the whole engine bay. Another set of batteries were also placed in the rear part of the chassis in which the fuel tank previously sits. The G-Wagen’s stock engine, transmission and transfer case was replaced by Kreisel Electronics with electric motors that are compatible to drive the SUV’s stock axles.
Running better than the factory diesel engine in terms of power, Schwarzenegger’s Benz now packs 482 horsepower and boasts an astounding acceleration of 0-60mph in just 5.6 seconds. This makes the electric SUV run more like a sport coupe.
Arnold’s G-Wagen is also still very much up for off-roading adventures as power is still sent to all four wheels making hill climbing a breeze just like any other G-Wagens.
And if you think the Terminator star is done customizing, this Benz G-Wagen is just for starters.
CNBC’s Jay Leno’s Garage recently featured Scwarzenegger and his awesome electric powered G-Wagen where the Hollywood legend revealed that Kreisel Electric will also be converting one of his Hummers into a full-electric powered vehicle.
Hats off to Arnold for saving the environment in the coolest way possible!
